About Amphibian Medicine and Reptile Veterinarians
In the recent years, there has been a sharp
increase of amphibians and reptiles being kept as
pets. Because of this recent, dramatic growth,
certain veterinarians, called herp veterinarians,
are specializing in providing health care to our
scaly friends. Herp veterinarians differ from dog
and cat or farm animal
veterinarians because they have additional
training in the field of reptile and amphibian
medicine. In many schools of veterinary medicine,
the study of exotic animals is given a mere week
or so in the curriculum. Herp veterinarians take
additional training and courses at special
schools and training centers to become reptile
specialists. Due to the increase of veterinarians
specializing in herp medicine, a professional
association was formed to foster teaching and
learning through conferences. In addition, many
herp vets have developed online forums and online
veterinary consulting websites to exchange ideas
about the treatment of reptiles and amphibians.
